1970's Nostalgia

Leeds City Museum have a new temporary exhibition looking at the decade that many used to say taste forgot, the 1970's. A fantastic, inspiring exhibition that really evokes the feeling of that time and brings back a few memories for those of a certain age! Especially the colours and that particular shade of wood, but more key the food and drink memories - advocaat, mmh egg nogg at Christmas, babycham glasses, too young to try the drink. Vesta curries, Smash potatoes and the wonder of Arctic Rolls......

Leeds City Gallery Exhibition

So the work for the V&A, Roundhay School and Leeds City Museum has come to a close with the preview evening at the museum with the Year 10 students and their parents. The Director of Museum Services congratulated everyone involved in the project and noted that this project illustrated perfectly one of the key reasons that the Museum was developed, as a means of inspiration for the community and for education at all levels. Also highlighted that the work exhibited was to a really high standard and the youngest exhibitors in the museum to date, which was fantastic. Such a tragedy that there is limited funding for these kinds of projects now but hopefully the knowledge gathered will be accessed by other schools and colleges.

The exhibition closes in April.

Exhibition transferred

I took down the Roundhay School, Design for Life Exhibition at the weekend, ready for its transfer to Leeds City Museum, where it will be until April in the Leeds Story section. I found it fascinating looking again at the work of these year 10 students who had never made a hat and some had done little textile work before, they are quite fabulous. In the museum all the hats will be on hat stands in a line. It looks really elegant, but you will have to go to the museum to peruse as no photos yet. Jennie who worked with me from Visual Communication course has her photographs of the workshops on display also to illustrate the progression of the group. All very exciting and rewarding.

V&A

The Victoria and Albert Museum have a great range of short films on their site just indulged in Stephen Jones and the author Tracey Chevalier on quilts which was very good.

Was at the museum on Wednesday with Esther the curator at Leeds City Museum and Emma textiles teacher at Roundhay for Design For Life project day, really illuminating and quite sad too as they have no more funding to extend the project from their initial pilots which have worked so well with schools and community groups. Met some very interesting people and as ever I just love being in the V and A
